So this is what it means to be Blood to an Aima queen.

Looking at the creatures and people who protected the Isador queen, I couldn’t help but feel that Helayna was at a severe disadvantage. Doubts sliced my new heart to ribbons. I ached to defend her and to prove my usefulness to her, but all we could do was feed her blood.

In broad daylight, we were the same as helpless.

I couldn’t shift to my dark alfar and fly at her enemies like the dragon. I couldn’t shift to my massive gargoyle and crush attackers like the jötunn rock troll at the other queen’s side. Trapped in this human form, I didn’t have a single weapon. I wasn’t even sure how much damage this body would take before it simply expired, leaving my queen even weaker and exposed.

Glancing through the other Blood one by one, I focused on the ones who remained in human form. The speaker who’d introduced the others, and the knight, were closest though I couldn’t remember their names. I wasn’t even sure what knight meant, though the man carried himself like a warrior. A man who’d seen plenty of battles and lived to tell about them.

The man sensed my attention and stepped closer, holding out his hand. “I’m Guillaume. I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name.”

I didn’t know human traditions, but the offered hand seemed to be a greeting, not an attack. As if to show he had no weapon in his bare hand. I held mine out too, equally empty of weapon. “Svar.”

The man nodded and withdrew his hand. “You’re new to this world and to serving as Blood, I dare say. Where are you from?”

“The Endless Slough, Niflhel, Hel. This world is definitely strange to us, but I will go where my queen goes without question.”

“Hel?” The man’s eyes widened and he grinned. “Then we’re loosely related. When I shift, I’m a hell horse. Different location in mythology, but the same idea.”

I didn’t know what a horse was, but if the man was a creature from another hell, then he might be able to answer some questions. “Are you able to shift in daylight?”

“Yes, though I usually choose to remain in this form. I feel that I fight better as a human knight.”

Inwardly, I sighed. If he wasn’t limited by the daylight, then we weren’t as similar as I’d hoped. “We fly like the dragon, but in daylight, we turn to stone, unable to move. This is the only form we can fight in as long as the sun shines.”

I hesitated, trying to decide if I dared to trust the man with my insecurity. But who else would I have the chance to discuss such things with? The wolf king? Hardly. He wasn’t Blood.

No Blood would have left his queen alone.

“This body is… weak,” I finally admitted. “We have no weapons. No teeth, talons, wings, let alone sword or battle axe. Though none of those things would help us fight the sunfires, we should at least be able to protect our queen against human or Aima threats.
